The excellent Paul Dano plays an odd young man in hip romantic comedy Gigantic (15)... , a vehicle he helped writer-director Matt Aselton produce. It seems to be an exercise in being quirky.
Dano's Brian is a salesman whose goal is to adopt a Chinese baby. He's drawn to an equally endearing misfit links of london charms (Zooey Deschanel). Meanwhile, a mysterious homeless man is stalking Brian and trying to kill him. Or this tormenter may be a figment of Brian's imagination.
The collision of reality with absurdity can be charming and unpredictable. But the insistence on being offbeat wears thin.
