VANCOUVER, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- World champion and world record holder Sven Kramer of the Netherlands showed his supremacy to win the men's 5,000 meters speed skating while South Korea's Lee Seung- Hoon became the first Asian Olympic medalist in the long distance at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games here on Saturday.
Kramer, a silver medalist in the event at the Turin 2006 Olympic Winter Games, proved a class of his own, winning the Replica Blancpain Watches 5,000m in a time of six minutes and 14.60 seconds, a Games record but 11.28 seconds away from his world mark.
In front of 6,756 spectators at the Richmond Olympic Oval, mostly dressed in Dutch orange colour, Kramer led the competition all the way and never looked back of his rival Shani Davis of the United States.
Kramer was in tears when he was in the arms of his father Yep Kramer, who was also a speed skater at the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Winter Games.
"I'm almost dead on the line at the last. It's an amazing feeling," Kramer said.
"I worked for four years for it. I only lost once. Now I have to finish it and I did," said the 23-year-old Kramer.
