James Muhammad lost his hearing aid two months ago, but thanks to the free screenings provided by the Virginia Beach Central Lion s Club, he'll soon have a new one.

"It'll help so I can hear again," Muhammad said. The 50-year- old, who resides in Chesapeake, was one of approximately 70 men and women who participated in a screening event Feb. 11 at the Cloverleaf Apartments.

Residents of Cloverleaf, a Virginia Supportive Housing development for homeless adults in the region, were joined by groups from the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center and Gosnold Apartments, a permanent homeless residence in Norfolk.

Scott Freeman , president of Virginia Beach Central Lions Rolex Watches Club, said people came from Hampton, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

Lines formed at the door as eager homeless and formerly homeless residents sat waiting to have their sight, hearing, blood sugar and more tested.

The all-volunteer Lions Club members worked diligently from 6 to 9 p.m. to get everyone checked.

Dotty Ballow , a member of the club and a licensed practical nurse, said she volunteers simply because she likes to help people.

Dr. Brent Segeleon , an optometrist in Virginia Beach, gave 20 eye exams and dispensed glasses to 15 people.

"Many of them haven't seen a doctor in years, and they're the ones in dire need," Freeman said. "You'll see the gratification; it's very touching and you get a deep-down feeling that it's really making a difference to them."

Freeman knows all too well the difference the screenings can make. He was diagnosed with glaucoma several years ago.

"I'm glad to be a part of this," Freeman Fake Paris Hilton said.

Like a well-oiled machine, participants had their fingers poked for the diabetes testing in the community room, then they boarded the parked van equipped with testing for hearing, vision and glaucoma.

Mel Stauffer , 80, has driven the van for the past 15 years. Inside, his wife, Christine, also 80, provided testing.

Ertha McGlone , 48, sat quietly across from Stauffer as her eyes were tested. But, when she was done, McGlone had plenty to say about the Lions Club and the volunteers who came out.

"They're a blessing to the homeless, those in the community without health care and people who can't afford to have these necessary things done," McGlone said. "I was wearing Dollar Tree glasses, and, thank God, I'm able to get the glasses that I need now."
