The Pitt and West Virginia men's basketball teams tumbled Monday in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll each after splitting a pair of games last week.
The Panthers (22-7), who lost to Notre Dame and defeated St. John's, fell five spots to No. 17, while WVU (22-6), which lost to Connecticut and beat Cincinnati, dropped two spots to No. 10.
In the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll, Pitt stumbled two spots to No. 18 and WVU was down one notch to No. 8. Syracuse (27-2), unranked to start the season, took over the top spot in both polls. It is the first time in 20 years that the Orange have been ranked No. 1 in the AP poll.

Meanwhile, two district teams, one men's and one women's, have been selected for the NCAA Division III Tournament and will play first-round games Friday. Both are members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Grove City (19-8), men's champion of the PAC, will play at Wooster (23-5), the North Coast Athletic Conference champion, and Washington & Citizen Replica Watches Jefferson (23-4), an at-large selection from the PAC, meets Ohio Athletic Conference champion Mt. Union (24-4) at Messiah College.

In the men's bracket, second-seeded Bethany (W.Va.) (18-8) faces Neumann, third-seeded Penn State-Behrend (19-8) meets Misericordia and fourth-seeded Pitt-Bradford (17-11) plays Alvernia in first- round games Wednesday.
The women's bracket features second-seeded St. Vincent (20-5) against seventh-seeded Pitt-Greensburg (17-9) and eight-seeded Juniata (15-11) takes on Delaware Valley (17-9), the top seed.
